Branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs)

In recent years, branched amino acids have taken the world ofdietary supplementation and particularly the world of sports dietetics by storm. What are branched amino acids and what are they used for? They are three essential amino acids found in our bodies: leucine isoleucine and valine.

These amino acids are also called BCAAs-an acronym that stands for "branched chain amino acids," or branched-chain amino acids. BCAAs comprise a large percentage of the amino acid composition of muscle tissue and help support protein and nitrogen metabolism, especially after exercise. BCAAs are unique biochemically because they are the only amino acids known to be metabolized directly in muscle cells instead of the liver, providing a source of nitrogen.
