Anxiety and Stress

Anxiety and stress are terms between which there is a deep correlation but which indicate different conditions. Stress can be defined as the psychophysical response of the body at those times when one feels overwhelmed by the amount of daily tasks. When the stress is limited in time, it is called acute stress; when it lasts for long periods of time, the term chronic stress is used.

Anxiety is defined as a response of the body to a feeling of real danger. In most cases, anxiogenic situations trigger an overreaction at the psychophysical level, particularly when the person senses a threat toward which he or she does not feel sufficiently ready or able to react. This is a subjective perception; among the main symptoms of anxiety are nervousness, apprehension, restlessness, insomnia, agitation, weakness, difficulty in relaxing, irritable states, difficulty in maintaining concentration, and cognitive disturbances (sleep disturbances, memory disturbances).
