Lactic Acid Bacteria

Lactic acid bacteria are bacteria that have the ability to break down lactose—a complex sugar found in milk—and convert it into lactic acid through a fermentation process.

There are various bacteria capable of metabolizing lactose, but only some of them can have beneficial effects on human health—these are known as probiotic lactic acid bacteria. Their action helps protect and restore the balance of the gut microbiota, preventing dysbiosis, counteracting the onset of intestinal disorders, preventing constipation, and promoting and restoring regular bowel movements.

What are probiotic cultures and why take them?

Probiotic cultures help rebalance the intestinal bacterial flora, which can often be disrupted by stress, an unbalanced diet, antibiotic use or digestive problems. They help improve digestion, reduce bloating and feelings of heaviness, and support the immune system.

Among the main beneficial effects of probiotic cultures:

  • They colonize the intestinal mucosa, helping to counteract the proliferation of “bad” bacteria.
  • They improve the protective activity of the intestinal barrier.
  • They promote the growth of the “good” intestinal flora, with a protective action.
  • They improve metabolism and nutrient absorption.

Probiotic cultures for children

Children have a more sensitive intestine that is more prone to imbalances, especially during periods of growth, seasonal changes or following antibiotic treatment. This is why probiotic cultures can also be useful for young children. Paediatric probiotic cultures are designed to:

  • Promote healthy and regular digestion.
  • Strengthen immune defences.
  • Reduce episodes of colic, bloating or diarrhoea.
  • Improve the absorption of essential nutrients.

Frequently asked questions

When should probiotic cultures be taken?

It is best to take them on an empty stomach, preferably in the morning or before meals, to promote the colonization of the intestine by beneficial bacteria.

Are probiotic cultures safe for children?

Yes, there are specific formulations for young children, lactose-free and also suitable for infants.

How long does it take for probiotic cultures to work?

It depends on the initial state of the intestinal flora, but improvements are generally noticed after a few days of consistent use.

Can I take probiotic cultures every day?

Yes, especially if you have a stressful lifestyle, an often unbalanced diet or frequent intestinal problems.
