Maltodextrin: what is it?
Maltodextrins are complex carbohydrates obtained by the hydrolysis of starch, usually from maize, rice or potatoes. Although they are technically polysaccharides, their chemical structure allows for rapid absorption, similar to that of pure glucose. This is why they are widely used in sport, particularly before and after training, or during prolonged physical activity.
Their metabolic impact is characterised by a high glycaemic index: they provide immediate energy but can cause insulin spikes and, in some people, gastrointestinal disturbances if taken in large quantities.
As regards their use in bodybuilding and strength sports, maltodextrins are used to promote energy recovery and restore muscle glycogen stores. It is in this context that the discussion of maltodextrin or cyclodextrin in bodybuilding takes place, where the choice depends on objectives, timing and individual sensitivity (which we will discuss in the following paragraphs).
Cyclodextrin: what is it and how does it work?
Cyclodextrins are one of the most advanced forms of carbohydrates used in sport. They are polysaccharides obtained through a specific treatment of starch that results in the formation of cyclic structures which are highly soluble and stable, capable of providing a steady release of energy without causing blood sugar spikes or digestive upset.
The distinctive feature of cyclodextrins is their low osmolarity, which results in rapid gastric emptying: this means they can be taken even during training (intra-workout), without compromising digestion or causing bloating.
The differences between maltodextrin and cyclodextrin, and which to choose
If you’re faced with a choice between maltodextrin and cyclodextrin, the first thing you need to know is that there’s no one-size-fits-all answer: it all depends on the type of activity you’re doing, your specific goals and your individual digestive and metabolic response.
- Maltodextrins are recommended particularly in situations where a rapid energy boost is required, such as post-workout to replenish muscle glycogen or during short but intense competitions. They are affordable, easy to find and can be combined with protein or creatine to enhance the anabolic effect. It should be noted, however, that for some people, they may cause gastrointestinal discomfort or lead to poorly controlled insulin spikes;
- Cyclodextrins, on the other hand, are ideal for those involved in endurance sports, technical training or high-intensity sessions, where it is necessary to maintain consistent performance and concentration. Their ability to ensure a more gradual release of energy, without putting strain on the digestive system, makes them a good choice even for those who train on a full stomach or who find it difficult to tolerate traditional carbohydrates. They are particularly popular with athletes who pay close attention to every detail of their sports nutrition.
PLEASE NOTE: very often, both online and offline, there is a debate between Vitargo and cyclodextrin. Vitargo is a high-molecular-weight polymeric carbohydrate, designed for rapid absorption. Unlike cyclodextrins, however, it has a higher osmolarity, which can slow down gastric emptying under certain conditions.
Cyclodextrin: is it bad for your health?
One of the most frequently asked questions among athletes concerns the safety of cyclodextrins. As they are a relatively new ingredient in the world of sports supplementation, it is natural to wonder whether there are any contraindications or side effects associated with their use.
The answer, supported by numerous scientific studies, is clear: cyclodextrins are safe and well tolerated by the vast majority of people. Their digestive profile is superior to that of many other carbohydrates, thanks to their low osmolarity and molecular structure, which promotes rapid gastric emptying. This significantly reduces the likelihood of bloating, nausea or other gastrointestinal disturbances that may, in contrast, occur with simple sugars or rapidly digestible carbohydrates.
We can therefore say that cyclodextrins are only harmful to health if consumed in excessive quantities or without a genuine energy requirement, just like any other macronutrient. In healthy individuals, when taken in the correct doses and in conjunction with a balanced diet, they constitute an effective, modern and safe source of energy.
When should cyclodextrin be taken?
The timing of intake is one of the most important factors in optimising the effectiveness of cyclodextrins. Thanks to their high solubility and low osmolarity, cyclodextrins are ideally suited for intra-workout use, i.e. during training.
We also recommend taking them before a long, intense session, such as a prolonged strength training session, a triathlon or an endurance race, as they enable you to start with well-balanced energy reserves and keep them stable over time.
If you train on an empty stomach or have a slow metabolism, cyclodextrins are an excellent alternative to traditional carbohydrates, as they do not require much digestive effort and do not cause sudden spikes in insulin levels.
CARBO Pure: pure energy from maltodextrin
CARBO Pure 1 kg is an energy supplement based on ultra-pure maltodextrin, obtained through an enzymatic process from maize starch. This formulation guarantees medium- and long-lasting energy, ideal for supporting performance during intense and prolonged training sessions.
Key benefits of CARBO Pure include:
- Rapid absorption and gentle on the stomach: thanks to its low osmolarity, it provides a steady supply of energy whilst avoiding gastrointestinal discomfort, nausea or bloating;
- A complete energy source: you can enjoy around 4 hours of continuous muscle replenishment, ideal for endurance sports, cycling, running and strength training sessions;
- Clean & inclusive formula: VEGAN, GLUTEN-FREE and LACTOSE-FREE, with no added artificial colours or flavours.
How to use: mix 2 scoops (60 g) into 500 ml of water and consume during or after physical activity to optimise recovery. For a weight-gain effect, combine with milk and protein: the carbohydrates trigger the release of insulin, promoting the uptake of amino acids into the muscles.
GLYCO Pure PROFESSIONAL: cyclodextrin supplement

GLYCO Pure PROFESSIONAL is Tsunami Nutrition’s advanced supplement designed for use during and after workouts, formulated to provide immediate energy, rapid recovery and effective muscle growth. Its exclusive formula combines two ingredients of very high biological value: Cluster Dextrin™ cyclodextrins, a source of controlled-release carbohydrates, and a complete pool of Ajinomoto® amino acids, guaranteeing purity and optimal absorption.
Thanks to the presence of Cluster Dextrin™, GLYCO Pure guarantees absorption that is up to 80 per cent faster than that of dextrose and traditional maltodextrins, facilitating the transport of nutrients directly into muscle tissue. This process is enhanced by citrulline malate, which stimulates nitric oxide production and promotes muscle hydration, cell volume and protein synthesis.
The 100% plant-based amino acid blend includes Ajinomoto® Ajipure, the global benchmark for quality: ultra-pure amino acids, fermented from plant sources, additive-free and highly bioavailable. It is also an ideal solution for vegan athletes, who need comprehensive support without compromise.
To round off the formulation, the patented VitaCherry Sport®, made from Montmorency cherries, reduces muscle soreness and speeds up recovery by combating oxidative stress and supporting the immune system. The result? Greater endurance, optimised performance, faster recovery and a reduced risk of overtraining.
GLYCO Pure PROFESSIONAL is:
- VEGAN
